Request for Part-Time Study (Undergraduate) or Half-Time Study (Graduate)

General information

F-1 and J-1 students must enroll as full-time students during every quarter of their program of study at UCSD. However, international students at UCSD are eligible to apply for part-time study (undergraduate students) or half-time study (graduate students) under certain circumstances.

Undergraduates are considered part-time if they enroll in 10 or fewer units per quarter or fewer than 8 units during Summer Session. Graduate students are considered half-time if they enroll in 6 or fewer units per quarter.

Eligibility for international students

Apply before the deadline to apply for part-time status. Deadline to apply for part-time study is end of Week 2 of the quarter you plan to enroll on a part-time/ half-time basis.

International students are eligible for part-time study for tuition purposes for the following reasons ONLY:

  • Medical: Verification from a doctor for serious or sustained illness or injury
  • Graduating Senior: you are in your final, graduating quarter

Students requesting a Reduced Course Load must still be enrolled in at least 6 units, unless:

  • Fewer than 6 units are required to complete your program
  • You have a valid medical reason for taking less than 6 units

To obtain part-time study approval (undergraduates):

  • Enroll in classes for the final quarter and submit the DDA before making the online request
  • Complete the Part-Time Study Application (E-Form)
  • Attach medical documentation (if request for part-time study is for medical reasons)
  • Your request for Part-Time Study must be approved by the International Students & Programs Office (ISPO), your College Advisor, and the Registrar’s Office. You will receive a new Form I-20 from ISPO.
  • Check your email for decision
  • Print out email confirmation for your records
  • Reminder: Online part-time study requests must be made by end of Week 2 of the quarter you plan to enroll on a part-time basis

To obtain half-time study approval (graduate):

  • Complete the Half-Time Study Application  (eform)
  • If your half-time request is due to medical reasons, attach verification from a doctor for serious or sustained illness or injury
  • Your request for half-time study  must be approved by the International Students & Programs Office, your Department, the Office of Graduate Studies and the Registrar’s Office. You will receive a new Form I-20 from the International Students & Programs Office.
  • Check your email for decision
  • Print out email confirmation for your records
  • Reminder: Online part-time study requests must be made by end of Week 2 of the quarter you plan to enroll on a part-time basis
