I-20/DS-2019 Requests (Degree-Seeking Students)

Fall-admit international students can generally begin requesting their I-20 (F-1) or DS-2019 (J-1) documents via the ISPO iPortal in early April. Winter-admit international students can generally begin requesting these documents in early November.

Early Program Start Date Requests

OPTION 1: Eligibility to enter the US up to 30 days prior to I-20/DS-2019 program start date
F-1 and J-1 students are eligible to enter the US up to 30 days prior to the program start date on the I-20/DS-2019. Generally, the required start date on the I-20/DS-2019 is the date of the official start of the quarter. If the early start program falls within the 30 days prior to the official start of the quarter, they may use an I-20/DS-2019 with the quarter start date and enter the US up to 30 days prior to the start date on the I-20 or DS-2019.

OPTION 2: Full Time Study – Classroom Hours
If the program meets the below requirements of full-time study, ISPO can issue the I-20s/DS-2019 for the students that are required to attend the early start program with the start date of the early program:

  • Minimum of 18 hours per week of classroom instruction hours
  • Letter from the department/program that includes:
  • Description of the early arrival program
  • Date of early arrival program
  • Verification and justification of the full course of study and number of classroom hours required for the early arrival program.
  • List of students required to attend the early start program(first name, last name, PIDS, program of study, dates of study)


OPTION 3: Full Time Study – Enrollment in Summer Session
If the program meets the below requirements of enrollment in Summer Session, we can issue the I-20/DS-2019 with the requested summer session start date. Department must provide verification that student will be enrolled or is enrolled full time for the requested summer session. Provide letter on department letterhead with name(s), PID(s) of students and verification of required summer enrollment for program.

  • When Summer Session I is a starting term, student must be enrolled full time for summer session. Full Time summer enrollment is considered 6 units for SS1 AND 6 units for SSII;
  • When Summer Session II is a starting term, student must be enrolled in 6 units for SSII
  • When Summer Session III (Special Summer Session) is a starting term, student must be enrolled in 6 units for Summer Session III.
  • Department must provide verification that student will be enrolled or is enrolled full time for the summer session
