Why you want to be an Orientation Assistant:
As an individual who came to America from abroad, I know how it feels to be dropped in a new environment and I would love to assist students with their needs and welcome students, families, faculty, and researchers. I also lived in the international housing on campus this past year and I LOVE interacting with international students and getting to know them better. While living in ihouse, students would always ask me for places to visit and about general information. I am also familiar with the different programs and events that are organized for international students. I would love to expand my experience with international students while helping them and become a part of the orientation team this coming fall!

  • Young Yi

    Young Yi

    Junior in Revelle College

    From: LA and Seoul
Major: Interdisc Computing & the Arts

Why you want to be an Orientation Assistant:
I've been part of the English In Action program as a tutor to an IR/PS visiting scholar and his wife for a year, but now they've returned to South Korea. I'm currently tutoring conversational English to Dr. Kim at UCSD Stein Research and am learning so much about cultural aspects of being at a foreign country. Both tutees have found my proficiency in Korean helpful in learning English during our tutoring sessions. I'd like to be part of a team that warmly welcomes international scholars, students, researchers, etc. to enhance their experience at a wonderful college, a beautiful city. :)

Place in the world you want to go most:
I'd love to visit Machu Pichu in Peru, because I've never been there before and is a heavily vegetated nature that reminds me of the woodsy green mountains of my hometown in South Korea.

    Favorite/best thing about UCSD:
The jacuzzi next to the Natatorium! :)
Aside from that the Loft and the Zone are my favorite places to enjoy performances by independent artists or meditation sessions.
The hilly landscape and ample vegetation of UCSD are great for walking around and getting a quick exercise.

Favorite thing to do off campus:
I enjoy exploring the petite shops, private art galleries, and eateries in Down Town San Diego and watching the calm and peaceful San Diego scenery on the trolly and shuttles on the way, but one can't forget about the San Diego beaches!

    Interesting/weird fact about you:
I decided to take on a pescetarian diet since nine years ago after finding out about the inhumane and unsanitary means of processing meat in factory farms. I also try to practice a freegan and minimal way of life.

  • Yutang Lin

    Yutang Lin

    Sophomore in Muir

    From: San Juan, Philippines
    Major: Undeclared

Why you want to be an Orientation Assistant:
First of all, I want to be an Orientation Assistant because I would want to welcome newly admitted students to UCSD. Moreover, since I just moved to San Diego from the Philippines last September 2012, I believe that I can be able to help the students transition into a different environment. I would really want to help them become less hesitant and fearful about living in a new environment. Since I also have in a way experienced culture shock, I know that I may be able to answer the people's questions about living away from home. Through my experiences, I would want to help them realized that they shouldn't be hesitant about being away from home, that living in a new environment is really a lot of fun and that UCSD is truly a home away from home!

Place in the world you want to go most:
Europe because I can just hop on the train and go wherever I want to go!

    Favorite/best thing about UCSD:
I love how big the campus is even if it entails a lot of walking (uphill and downhill). Biking downhill is definitely the best thing ever!

Favorite thing to do off campus:
Exploring San Diego and finding places to eat. :)

    Interesting/weird fact about you:
    I am right-handed but was born left-handed.
