CHANGING OTHER INFORMATION IN YOUR SEVIS RECORD

 

International students who need an updated I-20 (F-1 students) or DS-2019 (J-1 students) forms due to changes in certain information can request updated I-20/DS-2019 forms from the International Students & Programs Office (ISPO).

Review all steps below to understand how to request these updated forms.

 

Employment Update

If you have received employment authorization for F-1 CPT, F-1 OPT or J-1 Academic Training (AT) and need to change your employment information, then this change may be considered an I-20/DS-2019 Update.

However, make sure to follow specific instructions directly on the CPT, OPT and AT pages:

Financial Information Change

Purpose:

  • If you change your funding source and would like this change to be reflected in your SEVIS record and on your I-20/DS-2019, then you can request an updated I-20/DS-2019 from ISPO.

Submit Your Request for an Updated I-20/DS-2019:

  • Log in to iportal.ucsd.edu .
  • Go to "Services" tab.
  • Select "Updated I-20/DS-2019 Request".
  • Choose the "Financial Information Change" update option.
  • Fill out your request.
  • Upload a PDF copy of your new bank statement(s) or financial support letter(s).
  • "Submit" your request.

Receive Your Updated I-20/DS-2019:

  • Your updated I-20/DS-2019 reflecting your new financial information will be issued within 5 business days.
  • You can check the status of your request anytime by logging in to iPortal and clicking on "My Requests" tab
  • A notification email will be sent to you when your document is ready.
  • Sign your updated I-20/DS-2019 when you receive it, and keep your previous I-20/DS-2019 for your records, do NOT throw it away.

Health Notice & Incident Reporting

Purpose:

  • If you receive notice of COVID positive test result, report the incident to ISPO. Certain COVID-related health incidents for J-1 students are required to be reported within 24 hours of the incident or notice. 

Submit Your Request for an Updated I-20/DS-2019:

  • Log in to iportal.ucsd.edu .
  • Go to "Services" tab.
  • Select "Health Reporting Form for F-1/J-1 Students"
  • Fill out your request.
  • "Submit" your request.

Updates to your SEVIS Record: 

  • ISPO will review your submission within 1-3 business days. You can check the status of your request anytime by logging in to iPortal and clicking on "My Requests" tab. A notification email will be sent to you when we have completed your request. 
  • Only certain COVID-related health incidents for J-1 students are required to be reported within 24 hours of the incident or notice. Updates will not be reflected directly on your SEVIS Record; no Form I-20 or Form DS-2019 will be issued to you after completion of this request.

Name Change

Purpose:

  • If you change your name and would like this change to be reflected in your SEVIS record and on your I-20/DS-2019, then you can request an updated I-20/DS-2019 from ISPO.

Submit Your Request for an Updated I-20/DS-2019:

  • Log in to iportal.ucsd.edu .
  • Go to "Services" tab.
  • Select "Updated I-20/DS-2019 Request".
  • Choose the "Name Change" update option.
  • Fill out your request.
  • Upload a PDF copy of your passport biographical information page showing your new name.
  • "Submit" your request.

Receive Your Updated I-20/DS-2019:

  • Your updated I-20/DS-2019 reflecting your new name will be issued within 5 business days.
  • You can check the status of your request anytime by logging in to iPortal and clicking on "My Requests" tab
  • A notification email will be sent to you when your document is ready.
  • Sign your updated I-20/DS-2019 when you receive it, and keep your previous I-20/DS-2019 for your records, do NOT throw it away.

Citizenship or Country of Permanent Residency or City of Birth Change

Purpose:

  • If you change your citizenship or country of permanent residency or city of birth and would like this change to be reflected in your SEVIS record and on your I-20/DS-2019, then you can request an updated I-20/DS-2019 from ISPO.

Submit Your Request for an Updated I-20/DS-2019:

  • Log in to iportal.ucsd.edu .
  • Go to "Services" tab.
  • Select "Updated I-20/DS-2019 Request".
  • Choose the "Citizenship or Country of Permanent Residency or City of Birth Change" update option.
  • Fill out your request.
  • Upload a PDF copy of your passport biographical information page showing your new citizenship or country of permanent residency or city of birth.
  • "Submit" your request.

Receive Your Updated I-20/DS-2019:

  • Your updated I-20/DS-2019 reflecting your new citizenship or permanent residency or city of birth will be issued within 5 business days.
  • You can check the status of your request anytime by logging in to iPortal and clicking on "My Requests" tab.
  • A notification email will be sent to you when your document is ready.
  • Sign your updated I-20/DS-2019 when you receive it, and keep your previous I-20/DS-2019 for your records, do NOT throw it away.

Future Program Start Date Reflecting Intended Quarter of Entry into the U.S.

Purpose:

  • If you were issued an Initial I-20/DS-2019 for Returning Student and your return to UC San Diego has been changed to a later term, then you can request an updated program start date on your I-20/DS-2019.

Submit Your Request for an Updated I-20/DS-2019:

  • Log in to iportal.ucsd.edu .
  • Go to "Services" tab.
  • Select "Updated I-20/DS-2019 Request".
  • Choose the "Future Program Start Date Reflecting Intended Quarter of Entry into the U.S."" update option.
  • Fill out your request.
  • Upload a PDF copy of your new bank statement(s) or financial support letter(s).
  • "Submit" your request.

Receive Your Updated I-20/DS-2019:

  • Your updated I-20/DS-2019 reflecting your new program start date will be issued within 5 business days.
  • You can check the status of your request anytime by logging in to iPortal and clicking on "My Requests" tab.
  • A notification email will be sent to you when your document is ready.
  • Students may request entry to the U.S. only 30 days prior to the program start date listed on their Form I-20 or DS-2019.
  • Sign your updated I-20/DS-2019 when you receive it, and keep your previous I-20/DS-2019 for your records, do NOT throw it away.

Visa Status Change Approved

Purpose:

  • If your change of status to F-1 or J-1 is approved and would like this approval to be reflected on your I-20/DS-2019, then you can request an updated I-20/DS-2019 from ISPO.

Submit Your Request for an Updated I-20/DS-2019:

  • Log in to iportal.ucsd.edu .
  • Go to "Services" tab.
  • Select "Updated I-20/DS-2019 Request".
  • Choose the "Change of Status Approved" update option.
  • Fill out your request.
  • Upload a PDF copy of your I-797 Change of Status Approval Notice showing your new approved visa status.
  • "Submit" your request.

Receive Your Updated I-20/DS-2019:

  • Your updated I-20/DS-2019 reflecting your new approved visa status will be issued within 5 business days.
  • You can check the status of your request anytime by logging in to iPortal and clicking on "My Requests" tab.
  • A notification email will be sent to you when your document is ready.
  • Sign your updated I-20/DS-2019 when you receive it, and keep your previous I-20/DS-2019 for your records, do NOT throw it away.

Reinstatement Approved

Purpose:

  • If your Reinstatement is approved and would like this approval to be reflected on your I-20/DS-2019, then you can request an updated I-20/DS-2019 from ISPO.

Submit Your Request for an Updated I-20/DS-2019:

  • Log in to iportal.ucsd.edu .
  • Go to "Services" tab.
  • Select "Updated I-20/DS-2019 Request".
  • Choose the "Reinstatement Approved" update option.
  • Fill out your request.
  • Upload a PDF copy of your I-797 Reinstatement Approval Notice showing your reinstated visa status.
  • "Submit" your request.

Receive Your Updated I-20/DS-2019:

  • Your updated I-20/DS-2019 reflecting your reinstated visa status will be issued within 5 business days.
  • You can check the status of your request anytime by logging in to iPortal and clicking on "My Requests" tab.
  • A notification email will be sent to you when your document is ready.
  • Sign your updated I-20/DS-2019 when you receive it, and keep your previous I-20/DS-2019 for your records, do NOT throw it away.

Transfer-In Complete

Purpose:

  • If your SEVIS record to UC San Diego is complete and you would like this transfer completion to be reflected on your I-20/DS-2019, then you can request an updated I-20/DS-2019 from ISPO after the quarter has already begun.

Submit Your Request for an Updated I-20/DS-2019:

  • Log in to iportal.ucsd.edu .
  • Go to "Services" tab.
  • Select "Updated I-20/DS-2019 Request".
  • Choose the "Transfer-In Complete" update option.
  • Fill out your request.
  • "Submit" your request.

Receive Your Updated I-20/DS-2019:

  • Your updated I-20/DS-2019 showing your "continued attendance” instead of “transfer pending" will be issued within 5 business days.
  • You can check the status of your request anytime by logging in to iPortal and clicking on "My Requests" tab.
  • A notification email will be sent to you when your document is ready.
  • Sign your updated I-20/DS-2019 when you receive it, and keep your previous I-20/DS-2019 for your records, do NOT throw it away.
