CANCELING F-1/J-1 VISA STATUS:
WITHDRAWING FROM UC SAN DIEGO,
OR CHANGING VISA STATUS

 

Students withdrawing from UC San Diego or ending their post-completion employment authorization prior to their completion date must report their withdrawal to the International Students & Programs Office (ISPO) to terminate their F-1 or J-1 visa status.

Students changing from F-1/J-1 status to another status, such as H-1B or E-2, must also report this change in order for their current visa status to be terminated accordingly.

Review all steps below to understand how to report termination of your F-1/J-1 record and how it may affect your status.

 

Leaving the U.S. due to Suspension or Academic Disqualification from UC San Diego

STEP 1: Learn about the process

 


STEP  2: Submit a reporting form in iPortal

  • Log in to iportal.ucsd.edu .
  • Go to "Services" tab.
  • Select "Termination or Completion of Status Reporting Form".
  • Fill out your request.
  • Upload a PDF copy of your airline ticket or flight itinerary showing the date of your planned departure from the U.S.
  • "Submit" your request.

 


STEP 3: Learn what happens next

  • Your request will be processed by an ISPO advisor right after your departure from the U.S., or within 5 business days if you are already outside the U.S.
  • A notification email will be sent to you when your request has been processed by ISPO.
  • If you are in the U.S., you must depart no later than 15 days after the start date of suspension/disqualification, last date of enrollment or appeal denial, whichever date is latest.

Withdrawing from UC San Diego

 

STEP 1: Learn about the process

  • If you plan to withdraw from your UC San Diego program of study with no intention to complete your degree requirements, then review the university withdrawal information to determine if you need to submit a university withdrawal form to the Registrar's Office (undergraduate students) or with your graduate program (graduate students).
  • Report termination of your visa status in iPortal byt following instructions in STEP 2.

  • Log in to iportal.ucsd.edu .
  • Go to "Services" tab.
  • Select "Termination or Completion of Status Reporting Form".
  • Fill out your request.
  • Upload a PDF copy of your airline ticket or flight itinerary showing the date of your planned departure from the U.S.
  • "Submit" your request.

 


STEP 3: Learn what happens next

  • Your request will be processed by an ISPO advisor right after your departure from the U.S., or within 5 business days if you are already outside the U.S.
  • A notification email will be sent to you when your request has been processed by ISPO.
  • If you are in the U.S., you must depart no later than 15 days after the date of your withdrawal.

Withdrawing from Post-Completion Employment

If you plan to withdraw from your post-completion employment (OPT for F-1 students, or AT for J-1 students) with no intention to return to the U.S. to continue employment, then follow the steps below.

 


STEP  1: Submit a reporting form in iPortal

  • Log in to iportal.ucsd.edu .
  • Go to "Services" tab.
  • Select "Termination or Completion of Status Reporting Form".
  • Fill out your request.
  • Upload a PDF copy of your airline ticket or flight itinerary showing the date of your planned departure from the U.S.
  • "Submit" your request.

 


STEP 2: Learn what happens next

  • Your request will be processed by an ISPO advisor right after your departure from the U.S., or within 5 business days if you are already outside the U.S.
  • A notification email will be sent to you when your request has been processed by ISPO.
  • Students withdrawing from post-completion OPT must depart the U.S. within the appropriate grace period. Contact ISPO if you are unsure of what your grace period is.

Changing from F-1/J-1 Visa Status to Another Status

Changing to another non-immigrant status, such as H-1B, H-4, F-2, E-2, etc.

If you change from F-1 or J-1 visa status to another non-immigrant status, then you must complete the following:

  • Log in to iportal.ucsd.edu .
  • Go to "Services" tab.
  • Select "Termination or Completion of Status Reporting Form".
  • Fill out your request.
  • Upload a PDF copy of your I-797 approval notice showing your new status and date of approval.
  • "Submit" your request.
  • Your request will be processed by an ISPO advisor within 5 business days.
  • A notification email will be sent to you when your request has been processed by ISPO.

 


Adjusting to immigrant/permanent resident status

If you adjust to immigrant/permanent resident status, then you must complete the following:

  • Log in to iportal.ucsd.edu .
  • Go to "Services" tab.
  • Select "Termination or Completion of Status Reporting Form".
  • Fill out your request.
  • Upload a PDF copy of one of the following:
    • I-797 approval notice, or
    • U.S. Permanent Resident card (green card), or
    • Travel document, or
    • Memorandum of Understanding (meet with an ISPO advisor if submitting a Memorandum of Understanding).
  • "Submit" your request.
  • Your request will be processed by an ISPO advisor within 5 business days.
  • A notification email will be sent to you when your request has been processed by ISPO.
