TAKING CLASSES CONCURRENTLY AT ANOTHER SCHOOL
WHILE STUDYING AT UC SAN DIEGO

An international student can be enrolled in two different SEVIS-approved schools at the same time (concurrent enrollment), as long as the enrollment in both schools amounts to a full time course of study, and both schools are SEVIS-certified. Before you take a class at another academic institution, you must obtain authorization from your department/college and the International Students & Programs Office (ISPO).

STEP 1: CONFIRM ELIGIBILITY

In order to be eligible to enroll at another school, you must fulfill all of these requirements:

  1. You are an enrolled UC San Diego student, in good standing, for the quarter of concurrent enrollment.
  2. You have consulted with and received approval from your department/college advisor and determined that the requested class is either required to meet course requirements by your department or college, or is not available during the current quarter.
  3. Your registration at UC San Diego and the other academic institution will equal 12 or more units (full-time).
  4. If the class or classes taken are online/distance learning courses, only one class can be used to fulfill the full-time study requirement.

Concurrent Enrollment Authorization vs. Letter of Eligibility to Enroll at another School

You may need a Letter of Eligibility to Enroll at another School, if you want to enroll at another school and the following situations apply:
  • You enroll in full course load (12 units per quarter) at UC San Diego, OR
  • You enroll at another school in the Summer term and are
    • either enrolled in at least 1 unit at UC San Diego,
    • or will continue your enrollment at UC San Diego in the following Fall quater, OR
  • You are in the final quarter of your program and have an approved final quarter reduced course load (RCL) for that quarter, and are enrolled in at least 1 unit at UC San Diego in that quarter, OR
  • You are on post-completion F-1 OPT or J-1 Academic Training (AT) work authorization.

You will need Concurrent Enrollment Authorization if you want to enroll at another school and the following situation applies:

  • You enroll below full course load (12 units per quarter) at UC San Diego in either Fall or Winter or Spring quarter, AND
  • You are not authorized for a Reduced Course Load (RCL) by ISPO.

STEP 2: SUBMIT YOUR REQUEST

Before submitting your request:

  • Talk to your department/college advisor to determine that the class you plan to take can be used to fulfill UC San Diego course requirements.
  • Talk to an International Student Advisor at ISPO during our advising hours.

After you have talked to the Advisors:

STEP 3: RECEIVE YOUR AUTHORIZATION LETTER

  • A Concurrent Enrollment Authorization or Letter of Eligibility to Enroll at Another School will be issued within 5 business days.
  • You can check the status of your request anytime by logging in to iPortal and clicking on "My Requests" tab.
  • A notification email will be sent to you when your document is ready.
  • Only an electronic version of your document will be issued. Download it directly from your request and submit it to the other school of your concurrent enrollment in accordance with the other school's instructions.

STEP 4: REVIEW WHAT HAPPENS NEXT

If you requested Concurrent Enrollment Authorization:

  • After your enrollment at another school has ended, request a transcript from that school.
  • Any transcript will suffice, including unofficial, official, e-transcript, etc.
  • Email your transcript to istudents@ucsd.edu so that ISPO can verify that you completed at least 12 academic units (combined units from UC San Diego and the other school) in the quarter of your concurent enrollment, and maintained your F/J visa status.
  • Contact your UCSD College Advising Office to confirm how to transfer your units to your academic record at UC San Diego.

If you requested a Letter of Eligibility to Enroll at Another School:

  • You do not need to submit any additional documents to ISPO.
  • However, contact your UCSD College Advising Office to confirm how to transfer your units to your academic record at UC San Diego.
